I don't understand what Phishing is?

Phishing primarily involves 'look-a-like' websites. These websites are designed to trick you into believing you are on the 'real' site of an institution or company you do business with. Many times, these are financial institutions which require you to use identifying information such as:
  1. Logons
  2. Passwords
  3. Social Security Numbers
  4. Security Questions (e.g. Mother's Maiden Name, etc.)
  5. Etc
These 'fake' sites want to steal this information from you in order to steal your identity. Email is often used as a solicitation method to cause you to go to these 'false' sites. A link to these sites is embedded in the email message. The email message usually claims that you must respond to the 'critical' nature of the message in the email immediately. It is generally a good idea to verify with your institution or company if they have sent such an email, before linking to the site contained in the email.

However, should you inadvertently try to go to these sites, the CyberDefender MyIdentityDefender Toolbar, will interrupt you to warn you that this is a known Phishing attack. MyIdentityDefender will further aid you by providing navigation to the correct, safe website of your institution or company.

You may also perform your own Phishing Audit on any website you visit, by utilizing MyIdentityDefender's Site Info feature. This automatic feature examines the current page you are on and will advise you of the level of potential risk this page exposes you to. Please note: that even a HIGH Risk rating does NOT mean this page is a Phishing attack. Simply that sensitive information may be required to utilize the site. MyIdentityDefender will auto report, to the Early Alert Center, any site that may be suspicious.

Why should I use Pop-Up Blocker?

There are a lot of pop-up blockers, even one built right into Internet Explorer. However, MyIdentityDefender's Pop-Up Blocker is unique. The problem with Pop-Up Blockers is they block everything, except for sites you allow. Pop-Ups are a useful tool that many legitimate sites use to enhance your experience. Unfortunately, they are also used to show ads. MyIdentityDefender keeps a history of all Pop-Ups it has blocked allowing you to review/see any of the Pop-Ups that have been blocked.
